Emma stood over Regina’s hospital bedside waiting for the brunette to regain consciousnesses. Regina had taken a pretty bad blow to the head during the fire, and the doctor said she may not remember who she is. Just then Regina’s eyes began to open.
“Regina, are you okay? It’s me, Emma Swan.” Emma asked as Regina woke up.
“Who are you? Where am I, and what am I doing in this hospital.” Regina asked in a somewhat panicked voice.
It was just as Emma feared, Regina had amnesia. Her heart sank.
“Regina, it’s me, Emma Swan, Miss Swan as you sometimes call me. There was a fire and you got hit on the head. You’re in Storybrooke Hospital. Remember? You’re the Mayor here, and this is your son, Henry.”
Emma motioned to Henry to come to his mother’s bedside. Surely she’d remember her son. But the brunette just blankly stared up at them and shock her head. Emma stroked Henry’s head and pulled him into her side, she could see the sadness in his eyes.
“How’s she doing?” A soft voice asked.
Emma looked up to see Mary Margaret and David standing in the doorway of the hospital room. Emma shocked her head with a frown. Mary Margaret nodded understanding that Regina wasn’t well. They grew closer to Regina’s bedside.
“Regina,” The brunette turned her head towards Mary Margaret. “I’m Mary Margaret. Miss Blanchard, your son’s teacher. And this is David Nolan. Remember? You’re friends with his wife, Kathryn Nolan.”
Still Regina just blankly stared at the lot shaking her head.
“How are you feeling?” Emma asked Regina.
“My head hurts a bit but otherwise I’m okay. Thank you.” Regina responded with a slight smile on her face. It was the first time she had smiled since the accident.
“How about we all do outside for a minute and give Regina some space? She’s had a rough day.” Emma stated.
They followed Emma’s lead and shuffled into the hospital hallway. Emma was right behind when Regina called out to her.
“Emma? That is your name right?”
“Yes Regina it is.”
“I don’t understand. Why are you here looking out for me?”
Emma walked back over to Regina’s beside and kneeled down next to her. She grabbed Regina’s hand before answering her.
“Because I, Emma Swan, am your girlfriend. And I will never leave your side when you need me most.” She responded, trying to hold back tears.
“Bless your heart Emma. You must really love me to be so willing to care for me. I just wish I remembered you.”
“Don’t worry you will Regina, I promise!”
Emma got up off her knees, she didn’t want to leave Regina’s side but she knew the others were waiting for her. She had to keep reminding herself to keep it together, not just for Regina’s sake but for Henry’s as well. When she got into the hallway everyone looked up at her.
Emma sighed, “Thank you everyone for coming here. It’s going to be rough until Regina gets her memory back, but we have to be strong and be patient with her. The doctor said anything could trigger her memory so we just have to be hopeful.”
“Emma, if you need anything at all you know that Mary Margaret and I are here for you guys.” David stated.
“Thank you, it’s really good to know that we have friends here we can count on. Actually Mary Margaret, do you mind taking Henry for the night so I can get Regina settled in at home?”
“Of course Emma.” And with that Mary Margaret, grabbed Henry’s hand and the three of them left the hospital.
Emma walked back into Regina’s room and began packing up her things. After she had finished she careful helped Regina out of bed. She supported Regina with an arm around her shoulder, as they walked out to the car. The drive home was quite and Regina looked out the window trying to make sense of her surroundings. When they pulled up to Regina’s house, Emma once again helped Regina out.
“This is your house.” Emma said, as Regina stared up at the massive place before her.
They walked into the house, Emma set down Regina’s things, and gave her a tour. Walking through each room slowly, Emma carefully explained Regina’s house to her. But sadly nothing sparked the brunette’s memory. By time they got to the bedroom it was nightfall, and Emma suggested that Regina get some sleep.
“I’ll be in the guest bedroom across the way, if you need anything.” Emma stated as Regina began to get ready for bed.
“Emma, if you are my girlfriend, then I would like it very much if you spent the night with me. After all, you’ve been so wonderful to me. It’s only fair”
Emma smiled. Of course she wanted to sleep with Regina but she didn’t want to take advantage of her either. But since Regina asked Emma obliged.
“Of course Regina.” Emma kissed Regina carefully on the head and began to get ready. When she was finished she climbed into bed and joined Regina. Regina instantly snuggled up to Emma and wrapped her arms around her waist.
“Goodnight my princess.” Regina quietly muttered before falling asleep.
“Goodnight Regina, my queen.” Responded Emma in a similar tone, running her hand through the brunette’s hair.
Emma laid awake for a moment, her mind racing. She was enjoying this sweet softer side to Regina, and yet she missed Regina’s forceful side. She’d give anything to hear Regina yelling Miss Swan again. But before her thoughts could trail on further, she too was fast asleep.
Suddenly, Emma was awoken from her deep sleep. Regina was sitting up and crying next to her. The second Regina caught sight of Emma, she threw herself into Emma’s arms crying into her shoulder.
“Regina what’s wrong?” Emma said, trying to calm her by rubbing her back.
“I….I…I had an awful nightmare.” Regina began, trying to wipe away her tears. “I was in some dark castle, and I think I was an evil queen, and I was talking to some older man. I believe he was my father, and then for no reason at all I ripped his heart out. And that’s when I woke up.”
Regina had calmed down a bit and the tears had stopped. She sat up and was now looking into Emma’s eyes.
“What’s wrong with me, Emma? Is this who I am? Am I some evil person?” She said with a sad look in her eyes.
Emma continued to rub Regina’s back. She knew the dream was real, but she couldn’t tell Regina that. Not in her fragile state anyway.
“There’s nothing wrong with you Regina, it was just a dream. Now take a deep breath and try to got back to sleep.”
Regina nodded and the two snuggled back together again. Thankfully, the rest of the night was calm and they both slept well. Emma prepared breakfast that morning, while Regina got dressed. It was going to be a long day, as Emma had planned to take Regina all around Storybrooke, in hopes that she would remember something.
“Thanks again for last night.” Regina said with a smile as she sat done to eat.
“Regina it’s nothing really, I said I’d never leave your side. Now eat up we’ve got a long day ahead of us.”
Regina finished her breakfast and kissed Emma on the forehead, as she got up from the table. It was a bittersweet moment for Emma because she just wanted so much for the old Regina to be back. She sighed and quickly cleaned up, and the two ladies were off again. All day they toured the entire town of Storybrooke. From Granny’s Inn and Cafe, to the Animal Shelter, anywhere Emma thought might spark Regina’s memory. Yet, no matter who they talked to or where they went, Regina was still in a daze. Even the Mayor’s Office and Sidney did not spark a hint of Regina’s past.
“I’m sorry.” Regina said arrived back at the house.
“Regina it’s okay. It’s going to take time, and we have to be patient.” Emma said reassuringly.
The two headed back in the house, and Emma spotted Henry. He was home from school and grabbing a snack in the kitchen.
“I’m going upstairs to take a nap, Emma. I’m exhausted.” Regina said yawning.
“Good idea Regina. Call me if you need anything.” Emma replied as she made her way to the kitchen.
“How’s my mom?” Henry asked.
“I’m sorry to say she’s the same, Henry. Though she had a dream last night, of her life as the Evil Queen. I didn’t tell her the dream was true though, because I felt it might only hurt her already fragile state.”
Henry’s face lit up.
“That’s because of you Emma! You made her remember by sleeping with her last night! You’re counteracting the curse. Now if only she’d remember her life here in Storybrooke.” Henry said as his excitement faded.
Emma drew Henry in for a close hug. Not knowing what else to say to comfort him. As much as Emma missed Regina, she felt even worse for Henry. Though he seemed to be handling it well.
“Emma?” Henry said as he pulled away from her. “Remember how Mary Margret read my book to David, and that’s when he woke up?”
“Yes Henry, I do why?”
“Well I was thinking maybe you could do the same thing with my mom. Maybe it would help her remember?”
She didn’t want to disappoint Henry, but at this point she’d try anything.
“She’s napping now, Henry, so I think it would be worth giving it a try.”
Henry handed Emma the book, and wished her good luck. Emma quietly entered the bedroom, so as not to disturb Regina. She pulled up a nearby chair and took a seat next to the bed. Emma grabbed Regina’s hand and began reading. A short while later however, Emma too had fallen fast asleep.
It was morning again, and both ladies had made it through the night with no interruptions. The sunlight peaking through the window, woke Regina from her sleep. She jumped at the sight of sleeping Emma, next to her.
“Miss Swan what are you doing here!” She barked.
Emma jumped startled by Regina’s voice. She thought Regina was having another bad dream.
“What did you just say?” Emma asked finally starting to wake up.
“Miss Swan don’t toy with me you know exactly what I said! What are you doing here?” Regina barked again this time more annoyed then before.
A smile came across Emma’s face. She didn’t know how but Regina had remembered who she was.
“Regina calm down and listen to me. You hit your head during the fire a few days ago, and you didn’t remember who you were. Not me, not Henry, not anyone. So I’ve been looking after both you and Henry ever since.”
“Is this true Miss Swan? And if so how long have a been like this?” Regina asked.
“Yes Regina it is true, and thankfully you’ve only been out of it for a few days.” Emma replied, happy to see her lover back to herself again.
Regina nodded and proceed to make her way out of bed and towards the bathroom door. She paused for a moment and turned around to face Emma again.
“Thank you Miss Swan for always looking after myself and our son.” Regina said with a smile on her face.
“Anything for my queen. I love you too Regina.”
Emma walked over to where Regina was standing, and the two embraced in a kiss.
